22 Feb 2009 – Bowling

Bowling Time With Family and Friends
by: Cecilia Yew (M/1486)

One Sunday at 10.30 in the morning of 22nd February 2009, a group of Mensans together with family members converged at BJ Bowl in Bukit Jambul Complex to do their annual practice.

This time, we had 10 persons joining the bowling games. Our immediate past Chairman, PC Sim, came alone as his son could not make it. BL Yeoh, the organizer, brought his family of five. WL Cheok came with Elaine and their little son, Aidan, while Nic Sim came strolling in with Krista.

As many of us had not touched a bowling ball since the last bowling event held on 16th June 2007, we were a bit rusty with our techniques of rolling the ball towards the pins. Maybe Cheok might disagree with me as his score for the three games played was very consistent – 124,123 and 126. I was the total opposite of him as I was not very comfortable with the ball chosen nor my technique until much later into the games. This explains my score of 54 for the first game and 124 for the third game.

The bowling alley cleaners would probably be the happiest people around for that morning. Many ladies had ended up “cleaning the drains” when the balls rolled to the sides instead of hitting the pins.

After two hours of fun aiming to hit the targeted pins (but often in vain), it was time for the results. Guess what? Cheok and Elaine emerged as champions, BL and I were runners-up while Nic and Krista were third place in the men’s and ladies’ categories respectively. It was such a coincidence for couples to share the same position though in a different category!

Join us next year?

PENANG MENSA INVITATIONAL SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT 2001

09 Sept 2001

The Penang Mensa Invitational Scrabble Tournament 2001 was more like a family picnic than a serious high-brow scrabble competition. All the participants were busy cracking jokes and stuffing themselves with delicious cakes and cream puffs even as they struggled to conjure up words to score maximum points. Everyone had a lot of fun and things went off smoothly.

However, the competition was intense and there were many loud moans, groans and curses over missed chances and unfavourable tiles. After the dust or rather the cakes had settled the winner emerged.

Closed Category

Champion : Chuah Sim Swee
First Runner-up: Terrence Ooi
Second Runner-up: Julian Choy

Open Category:

Champion : John Lam
First Runner-up : Paulette Yeoh
Second Runner-up: Jackie Cheah
Third Runner-up : Ng Chee Eng

The best part was no one went back empty-handed or “empty-bellied”. There was enough spot prizes for each of the seven rounds to keep everyone happy.

I would like to thank Jackie Cheah and Paulette Yeoh for the cakes and puffs they baked and also my reliable and efficient back-up team consisting of Mah Siew Keat, Chin Siew Yen, Chua Lian Chooi, and John Lam. We are all looking forward to next years competition. You can bet we will all study and practice hard till then!

MENSA INVITATIONAL SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT 2000

Report by Ms Chuah Sim Swee

A very merry time was had by all in room 24, Dewan Masyarakat Penyayang on 3rd June, 2000. Fourteen scrabblers, mensans and non mensans alike cracked their heads from 9.00pm till 5.00a.m. trying to outwit and outscore each other while stuffing themselves with cakes and cream puffs.

The moans and groans tha filled the air were not caused by upset tummies but by bad tiles and inablities to find parking spaces on the board for beautiful bingos.

After the dust had settled, the winners for the open category were:

Dr. Mohd Salahuddin b. Mohd. Ariff(champion),
Chuah Sim Swee (first runner-up),
Lim Shalyn (2nd runner-up),
Ricky Chan Ewe Hock(3rd runner-up)
and seven year old Ong Suanne (fourth runner-up)

In the closed category which is for Mensans only, Chuah Sim Swee took home the first prize trophy and also the championship trophy, Terence Ooi was first runner-up and Kelly Lim Suan Ling, second runner-up.

The highest bingo was scored by Dr. Salahuddin while Ricky Chan Ewe Hock had the highest game spread. The trophy for the most number of bingoes went to Chuah Sim Swee with 14 bingos in 7 games.

Yours truly would like to once again thank all the scrabblers and helpers who managed to squeeze themselves into our tiny cubicle of a room to make this competition a success. The one horsepower air-con was literally flogged to death to keep temperatures down. The overwhelming response resulted in some having to play outside.

A special thanks to Chin Siew Yen for bearing with us for nine hours while manning the computer and nipping out to get our lunch, Cindy Ooi for running herself ragged checking out all the challenged words and Jackie Cheah (Kelly’s mom) for her delicious cakes.

I must also not forget Penang YMCA for generously loaning us their scrabble sets and chess clock. I hope we will again receive such an enthusiastic response for our scrabble competition next year but we must find a bigger venue for the event!

MENSA INTERACTION GET-TOGETHER 2000

Date: 23 April 2000 (Sunday)
Time: 4.00 – 9.00 pm
Place: Clubhouse, Lavinia Apartments, Taman Sri Nibong

Report by Mr Sam Lim

The 8.00 am wake up call was a cruel start to the day(for me, at least). I had to leave by 9.00 am, and after some coffee and bread, I was on the bus and on my way to Butterworth. After arriving at the Jetty(Butterworth), I had to wait for a Mensan from Perak at 12.30pm. Fortunately, I was able to catch him as the clue he informed me was – he’ll be wearing pink t-shirt!! (Later I found out that he likes pink panther….)

After having our lunch, we crossed Penang Straits by ferry, then proceed to Penang Mensa Gathering, our destination, by bus. However, the bus ride was not a pleasant one and in addition, we had to take a long walk to the Lavinia Apartment where the gathering was held, thanks to our lousy tour guide(me) who stopped the bus at the wrong location!!

Arriving red hot, we found more than 20 cool mensans sitting in the club house, chit-chating while waiting for us!! (Haha… actually they were not waiting for us, but the first actitvity had just started) The gathering started off at 4pm sharp with brief introduction of ourselfs. And the best introductory award was won by Sam who gave every attendee, including a 5 year-old girl who swims in baby swimming pool, his full write-up resume, beside, he read like a news reader. A totally deserved winner.

The first activity has to be followed by the refreshment as Mr. Sam resume reading was a bit too long causing the refreshment an absolute need!

After the refreshment, we are forms into 4 groups and the second activities, the treasure hunt, started. We were told to look for 4 different kind of leaves, 4 kind of blue colour cards, 4 different coins, 4 kind of hair pin, a screw and a white hair. The game was won by group A which has strange behaviour – they have got all those strange things in their pocket! Anyway, the best contributor is the white fur cat which I think, would never dare to appear at the clubhouse anymore….

The third game prepared was the “draw and guess”. The game was won by Group A which had a genius drawer from Australia, Simon and a wild guesser, Ms. Jennifer. Then, it was the “bing bang boom” game where 5 groups were formed and each need to boom other groups (which were labeled with country names). This game was won by XXX country (given by Ms. Koay, but until now I still don’t know what’s that country name!).

It’s about 7pm when the games ended, and it was dinner times, which was a bit of a problem…the food was delicious and all were as hungry as vultures (new to me too). Guess what, everybody ate like vultures too!! …. but the style really kept the table clean! Well done!!

After the vulture-style dinner, we had the lucky prize draw. There are 8 lucky prizes and I was lucky enough to take the grand prize!! Finally, the photo session for the gathering and our checker competition winners – Terence(Man) and Cindy(Woman).

We were all exhausted after a day of exciting games, However, after having a couple of glasses of superb orange juices, and it was a happy end to a beautiful day.

(I would like to thanks Penang Mensa Chapter for contributing foods, thoughts and efforts to make this gathering a success. Thank you)
